Face to Face

Nicola Heidemann’s primary material is titanium. Through forging, she creates forms and surfaces whose contrasts – convex and concave, rough and smooth – define the tactile quality of her work: seeing with your hands! The working process is not fully controllable, making chance a welcome collaborator.

For Stephan Hampala, on the other hand, chance plays only an occasional role during the search for materials: 19th and early 20th-century glass beads, whose precise crafting requires meticulous planning of forms and patterns.

For our exhibition, the focus is on no less demanding and particularly rare vintage metal beads. Unpredictability versus calculation: What emerges?
